Murphy, Clayton, and Mitchell Recognized with BIG EAST Sport Excellence Awards

Villanova University continues to shine in the realm of student-athlete excellence, with three of its own receiving the prestigious 2023-24 BIG EAST Sport Excellence Awards. Liam Murphy, Roschell Clayton, and Meghan Mitchell were recognized for their outstanding achievements in academics, athletics, and community service. This marks the fifth consecutive year that Villanova has had at least three Sport Excellence Award honorees, showcasing the university’s commitment to fostering well-rounded student-athletes.

The BIG EAST Sport Excellence Awards are presented to one student-athlete in each BIG EAST-sponsored sport based on academic credentials, athletic accomplishments, and volunteer service to the community. Eligible student-athletes must have attained junior academic standing and a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.00. The winners are chosen by the BIG EAST Faculty Athletics Representative Council, making this recognition a significant honor for those who receive it.

Villanova has a rich history of success in the Sport Excellence Awards, with a total of 45 winners since the award’s inception in the 2009-10 academic year. In the last five years alone, the university has produced 21 honorees, with at least three award winners each year. This year, Murphy, Clayton, and Mitchell continue the tradition of excellence at Villanova, with each athlete making their mark in their respective sports.

Liam Murphy, a standout in men’s cross country, has achieved remarkable success both on the collegiate and national stage. In addition to his athletic achievements, Murphy is a communication major and a three-time selection to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team, exemplifying his commitment to academic excellence.

Roschell Clayton, a star in women’s outdoor track & field, has also left a lasting impact on the Villanova athletics program. A three-time All-American high jumper and record holder, Clayton’s accolades include sweeping the BIG EAST indoor and outdoor high jump titles and being named the Penn Relays champion. Graduating magna cum laude with a degree in communication, Clayton is currently pursuing her MBA while maintaining her status as a four-time member of the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team and the BIG EAST All-Academic Team.

Meghan Mitchell, a standout in field hockey, has made history as one of four Villanova field hockey athletes to earn All-America status. With a stellar career that includes multiple accolades and record-breaking performances, Mitchell’s impact on the field is undeniable. A Finance major, Mitchell has consistently excelled in both academics and athletics, earning recognition on the BIG EAST All-Academic Team and the NFHCA National Academic Squad throughout her collegiate career.

In conclusion, Villanova University’s trio of Sport Excellence Award winners exemplify the university’s commitment to excellence in academics, athletics, and community service.
