Vanderbilt University Athletics Trio of Golfers Advance at U.S. Amateur

The 124th U.S. Amateur Championship has been an exciting event for Vanderbilt University’s golf team, with seniors Gordon Sargent and Jackson Van Paris, along with junior Wells Williams, advancing to match play after impressive performances in the stroke play rounds. The trio secured their spots in the top 64 players after two rounds of intense competition, showcasing their skills and determination on the course.

Van Paris led the Vanderbilt group with a stellar performance, finishing tied for eighth after going 5-under through the stroke play rounds. His consistency and ability to score birdies were key factors in his success, demonstrating his talent and composure under pressure. Sargent and Williams also put up strong showings, each carding 1-under to secure their spots in the match play rounds, finishing tied for 32nd on the leaderboard.

The Round of 64 matches at the U.S. Amateur will kick off at the Hazeltine National Golf Club, with Williams teeing off against Jacob Modleski at 9:10 a.m. CT. Sargent will face Tiger Christensen at 10 a.m. CT, while Van Paris will play against one of the 14 golfers from the playoff at 11:30 a.m. CT to determine the final 11 match play spots. Golf enthusiasts can catch all the action of the match play rounds at the 124th U.S. Amateur Championship on Golf Channel and Peacock. The live coverage will include the first three rounds of match play from Wednesday to Friday, with Peacock airing from 4-5 p.m. CT and Golf Channel from 5-7 p.m. CT. The semifinals on Saturday will be broadcasted on Golf Channel from 2-5 p.m. CT, followed by the championship on Sunday from 1-4 p.m. CT.

Van Paris showcased his skills during the stroke play rounds, carding 5-under over two days of competition. His impressive performance included a total of ten birdies, with five in each round, highlighting his consistency and ability to score low. Sargent, the world’s top-ranked amateur player, made a remarkable climb on the leaderboard in Round 2, finishing 3-under to secure his spot in match play. His strong showing and strategic play were instrumental in his advancement.

Williams also displayed his talent on the course, finishing 1-under over two rounds to secure his spot in match play. The junior golfer from West Point, Mississippi, showcased his skills by collecting seven birdies in total, demonstrating his ability to compete at a high level. Freshman Ryan Downes also competed in the stroke play rounds, finishing at 4-over after showcasing his potential and determination on the course.
