Bonner-Prendie field hockey team ready to dominate this fall

The Bonner & Prendergast field hockey team is gearing up for the upcoming season with high hopes of claiming a Catholic League title. Despite falling short against powerhouse programs like Archbishop Carroll and Cardinal O’Hara in recent years, the Pandas are determined to make a statement in 2024.

Under the leadership of second-year head coach Jordan Monaghan, who was a member of the Pandas’ 2009 championship squad, the team is focused on breaking the dominance of Carroll and O’Hara. Monaghan acknowledges that his team has consistently been ranked third behind these top programs but believes that this year could be different.

Senior players Taylor Eagan and Mel Standen are optimistic about the Pandas‘ chances this season. Eagan, a midfielder who earned All-Catholic League and All-Delco honors last year, emphasizes the team’s underdog status as motivation to work harder and improve. Standen, a forward, highlights the strong senior leadership and camaraderie among the players as key factors in the team’s potential success.

Key contributors for Bonner & Prendie include senior midfielder Sarah Oxenberg, senior forwards Grace Edwards and Samari Rodriguez, junior defender Tana George, and sophomore goalkeeper Cara Schaffer. With a mix of experienced seniors and talented underclassmen, the Pandas are poised to make a run for the championship.

One significant change implemented by Coach Monaghan is adding an extra forward to boost offensive production. The team’s strength lies in the midfield, led by standout player Taylor Eagan. Monaghan is optimistic about the team’s offensive capabilities this season and is focused on improving their scoring ability.

Despite not having many players dedicated solely to field hockey, the Pandas have utilized the offseason to participate in developmental programs like the Mayhem indoor field hockey club. This extra practice and skill development have prepared the team for the challenges ahead and improved their overall performance.

The sense of community within the team is strong, with many players hailing from Drexel Hill and having family ties to the school. This connection fosters a family-like atmosphere and a sense of unity among the players, which can be a valuable asset on the field.

As the Pandas prepare to kick off the 2024 season against Lower Merion, the team is focused and determined to make a statement in the Catholic League. With a talented roster, dedicated coaching staff, and a strong sense of camaraderie, Bonner & Prendergast field hockey is ready to compete at the highest level and challenge the top programs for the championship title.
