Women’s Soccer narrowly loses match against Rice

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s soccer team faced off against the Rice Owls in a tightly contested match at Holloway Field. This was the first meeting between the two programs, and both teams were eager to make their mark on the field. The game ended with a 1-0 victory for Rice, with the lone goal coming in the 65th minute from Leah Chancey.

Despite the loss, UTRGV’s freshman goalkeeper Heiddis Sigurdardottir put on a stellar performance, making a total of seven saves on 17 shots faced throughout the match. Sigurdardottir’s efforts kept her team in the game, especially in the first half when Rice outshot the Vaqueros 10-3. The defense, led by junior defender Libbie Mayfield, also played a crucial role in keeping the Owls at bay.

In the first half, UTRGV managed to muster three shots, with freshman forward Jordan Matthews, Mayfield, and sophomore defender Rosie Train all taking their chances. Matthews had a particularly promising opportunity in the 21st minute, but her shot was deflected. The Vaqueros showed resilience and determination, despite being outshot by Rice.

The second half saw a back-and-forth battle between the two teams, with Chancey eventually breaking the deadlock in the 65th minute to give Rice the lead. Sigurdardottir continued to showcase her skills with some impressive saves, while UTRGV’s offense, led by Olivia Trotter, Linnea Eld, and Lisa Elowsson, tried to mount a comeback. The Vaqueros matched Rice with seven shots in the second half, but were unable to find the back of the net.

As the match drew to a close, UTRGV pushed forward in search of an equalizer, but Rice’s defense held firm. Eld, in particular, put in a strong performance, putting all three of her shots on goal. Despite their efforts, the Vaqueros were unable to find a way past Rice’s defense and ultimately fell short in their quest for a victory.

Looking ahead, the Vaqueros will return to the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex for their next match against Southern. Fans can attend the game for free but will need a digital pass for entry. The team will be looking to bounce back from this defeat and put on a strong performance in their upcoming fixtures.

In conclusion, the match between UTRGV and Rice was a closely contested affair, with both teams showing determination and skill on the field. While the Vaqueros ultimately fell short, they can take pride in their performance and look to build on their strengths in future matches. With a talented squad and a resilient spirit, UTRGV will be aiming to turn their fortunes around and secure positive results in the games to come.
