Monty Tech field hockey coaches embracing new roles this season

Liz Raymond is embarking on her second season with Monty Tech field hockey, this time at the varsity level. As a new coach who had never played or coached field hockey before last year, Raymond has found her rulebook to be an invaluable resource. She diligently studied the rulebook cover to cover, watched YouTube videos, and sought guidance from experienced coaches like Joanna Gogan to familiarize herself with the sport.

Raymond’s journey into coaching began when she was asked to fill a coaching position at Monty Tech after starting her job as a math teacher at the school. Despite her lack of experience in field hockey, she accepted the challenge and took on the role of coaching the junior varsity team. Throughout her first season, Raymond immersed herself in learning the game, honing her coaching style, and gaining valuable experience from mentors like Cassie Skinner, the previous varsity coach.

After Skinner stepped down, Raymond naturally transitioned to the varsity level, with Jill St. Jean taking over the JV team. The duo collaborates closely to lead the program, with St. Jean bringing her knowledge of the sport and Raymond offering her seasoned coaching expertise. Together, they work to integrate JV players into varsity practices, allowing them to progress and develop faster.

As they prepare for the upcoming season, Raymond and St. Jean face the challenge of integrating new players into the team and adjusting to their roles as new coaches. Despite the uncertainties, they are confident in their abilities and rely on their rulebook to guide them through any obstacles they may encounter. With a successful year behind them and a supportive coaching partnership, Raymond and St. Jean are excited to see where this season will take them and the Monty Tech field hockey team.
