David Curry, a retired educator and president of the Sunshine State Amateur Golfers Association, stressed that golf is not just about hitting the perfect drive but also about building relationships and character. He believes that the way a person plays golf can reveal a lot about their true nature.
The expo and forum, now in its fourth year, was inspired by a need to focus on cultivating a new constituency for the sport. Jim Beatty, the owner of Jim Beatty Golf Ventures, recognized the underrepresentation of African Americans in golf and saw an opportunity to promote the game, identify opportunities, and educate people of color about the benefits of playing golf. Despite the groundbreaking success of Tiger Woods in the sport, there is still a significant gap in participation among African Americans, who make up only a fraction of the population of golfers.
The economic impact of golf cannot be overlooked, with the industry generating billions of dollars each year and providing numerous job opportunities. Beatty highlighted that ten out of 200 jobs in America are golf-related, underscoring the potential financial benefits of engaging in the sport. Additionally, golf is a sport that can be enjoyed by people of all ages, from young children like 13-year-old Derron Blake to retirees like Drew Cody and James Anderson, who have transitioned from professional sports to golf.
For many participants, golf is more than just a recreational activity; it is a way to instill discipline, character, and values in young people. Vanesa Fields, a mother of five from Palm Beach Gardens, sees golf as a foundation for a good life for her children, emphasizing its connection to health, wellness, business, and even potential scholarships. Fields‘ children stumbled upon golf by chance at a sports expo and have since embraced the sport for its physical, mental, and social benefits.
The African American Golf Expo and Forum serves as a platform to raise awareness about the importance of diversity and inclusion in golf and to encourage more people of color to take up the sport. By showcasing the positive impact of golf on individuals and communities, the event aims to break down barriers and create opportunities for underrepresented groups to participate in and benefit from the game.
