North Carolina to maintain their winning mindset for upcoming field hockey season

As the 2024 UNC field hockey squad gears up for another season, one thing remains constant – their commitment to taking it one game at a time. This tried and true approach has served the Tar Heels well in the past, and they are ready to face whatever challenges come their way in the upcoming season.

One of the familiar challenges that UNC will face is the ACC-Big Ten Challenge, a tournament they have competed in for the past four years. This year, however, the Tar Heels will be hitting the road to face off against Michigan and Iowa in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Despite the tough competition, UNC remains unfazed, with head coach Erin Matson praising her team’s motivation and determination.

After the ACC-Big Ten Challenge, North Carolina will continue their non-conference schedule with games against Penn and Princeton in Louisville, Kentucky as part of the ACC-Ivy League Conference Crossover. These matchups will test the Tar Heels early on in the season, but they have been diligently preparing since their national championship victory in 2023.

Junior midfielder Sietske Brüning highlighted the team’s focus on building upon their spring training and ensuring that everyone is on the same page. This emphasis on teamwork and communication has been a key factor in UNC’s success in previous seasons and will continue to be a driving force in their quest for another championship.

In addition to their early non-conference tests, North Carolina will face off against the three teams that handed them losses in the 2023 season – Iowa, Liberty, and Virginia. While adjustments will be made on a game-to-game basis, the Tar Heels will rely on their solid foundation of principles and fundamentals that have proven successful year after year.

As the 2024 season unfolds, one thing is certain – some things never change. The UNC field hockey squad’s dedication to hard work, teamwork, and a game-by-game mentality will once again be the cornerstone of their success. With a talented roster, experienced coaching staff, and a winning mindset, the Tar Heels are poised to make their mark on the field hockey world once again.
