Volleyball Ready to Kick Off 2024 Season with First Serve

UC Davis volleyball is gearing up for an exciting 2024 season with a team filled with experience, talent, and determination. Led by senior Olivia Utterback, who was named to the Big West Preseason Coaches‘ Team, the Aggies are ready to make their mark in the competitive world of collegiate volleyball.

Head coach Dan Connors is optimistic about the upcoming season, noting that this team has a different energy and feel compared to previous years. With strong returning players and talented newcomers, the Aggies have been putting in the work during preseason to ensure they are prepared for the challenges ahead.

The season kicks off with the Stacey Clark Classic hosted by Purdue, where UC Davis will face UMBC in their first match. The Aggies will then open the University Credit Union Center on September 10 against Sacramento State, followed by a matchup against BIG 10 program UCLA on September 19. Conference play begins at the end of September with games against Long Beach State and UC San Diego.

In a preseason scrimmage against Cal, UC Davis showed their strength by securing a 3-2 five-set win, setting a positive tone for the rest of the season. The team’s performance in 2023 was notable, with wins against powerhouse programs like Arizona and North Carolina. They also clinched a spot in the Big West Tournament for the first time in program history.

One of the key players to watch this season is Olivia Utterback, who had an impressive All-Conference season as an opposite hitter in 2023. She led the team in points, kills, and service aces, showcasing her versatility and skill on the court. Utterback’s leadership and competitive spirit will be crucial for the Aggies‘ success this season.

In addition to Utterback, returning starters Jade Light, Reese Diersbock, and Ally Chandler bring valuable experience to the team. Sophomore setter Mia Starr will play a crucial role in setting up the offense, having led the team in assists last season. The addition of graduate transfer Allie Merz from LIU adds depth to the setter position and strengthens the team’s overall lineup.

With a deep roster that includes a mix of experienced players and talented newcomers, UC Davis is poised to have a successful season. Coach Connors is confident that his team is ready to take on the challenges that lie ahead, both in their pre-conference schedule and in the competitive Big West Conference.

As the Aggies set their sights on the Big West Tournament hosted by UC Irvine in November, fans can expect an exciting and competitive season from this determined and focused team. With a strong foundation of experience, leadership, and skill, UC Davis volleyball is ready to make a statement in 2024.
