Are you part of the ‚9% club‘ aiming to qualify for LA in four years?

As the excitement for the upcoming Los Angeles Olympics in 2028 continues to build, a recent survey has shed light on the confidence levels of Britons when it comes to their own athletic abilities. According to the YouGov survey conducted after the Paris Olympics, a surprising 9% of Britons believe they could qualify for the table tennis competition at the next Olympics if they started training today. This statistic is a testament to the optimism and ambition of the British public when it comes to their sporting potential.

The survey also revealed that 27% of respondents thought they could qualify for at least one sport at the Olympics if they put in the full four years of preparation leading up to the LA Games. Table tennis ranked fourth on the list of the most likely sports for qualification, following 10m air rifle shooting, archery, and badminton. It is clear that there is a strong belief among Britons that with dedication and hard work, Olympic dreams can become a reality.

Interestingly, the survey found that men were slightly more confident than women in their ability to reach Olympic standards. Additionally, younger people were more optimistic about their chances of qualifying for the Olympics compared to older age groups. In the realm of table tennis, 17% of 17-to-25-year-olds believed they could qualify if they started training immediately, with the percentage decreasing to 12% for 25-to-49-year-olds, 6% for the 50-to-64 age group, and 4% for those aged 65 and above.

To put these beliefs to the test, a volunteer named Rachel challenged herself against some of the ParalympicsGB squad at their training base in Sheffield. The experience proved to be more challenging than she had anticipated, highlighting the level of skill and dedication required to compete at the Olympic level. While becoming an Olympian demands talent and years of hard work, table tennis is a sport that is accessible to everyone and offers a great starting point for aspiring athletes.
