Atwater Embraces the Chance to Play Amateur Baseball – West Central Tribune

Atwater baseball is making headlines this year, not just for their impressive performance in the state tournament but also for their remarkable fundraising efforts to improve Kingery Field. The team has raised nearly $250,000 for park improvements, including a covered grandstand, a new backstop, and a new scoreboard. The initial goal of $300,000 set in March has been surpassed, with the new target set at $400,000 to also upgrade Atwater’s youth baseball field located next to Kingery Field.

„We’re trying to give back to the community here, trying to help the game grow,“ said Atwater Chuckers player/manager Jordan Olson. This dedication to improving the facilities shows the team’s commitment to not only their own success but also to the development of baseball in the community.

The Chuckers are set to face off against the Loretto Larks in the 101st annual state amateur baseball tournament, marking Atwater’s first appearance in 30 years. The Larks, on the other hand, are no strangers to the tournament, making their fourth consecutive appearance and their 16th since 1969. Both teams boast former Major League Baseball players on their rosters, with Corey Koskie representing Loretto and Mike Kingery representing Atwater.

Koskie, a former Minnesota Twin, serves as the designated hitter for the Larks, while Kingery, who played for multiple MLB teams, takes on a coaching role for the Chuckers. Despite his coaching duties, Kingery has made appearances on the field, showcasing his skills at the age of 63. The matchup between these two teams promises to be an exciting one, with both sides bringing a mix of experience and talent to the game.

Atwater plans to start Isaac Schmitt on the mound, with Josh and David Kingery playing key roles in the outfield and infield, respectively. The team’s strong defensive lineup, coupled with their scrappy offense, gives them confidence heading into the tournament. While nerves may be present, optimism shines through as the Chuckers look forward to the challenge ahead.

In addition to the Atwater/Loretto matchup, other state games involving area teams include the Litchfield Blues, Raymond Rockets, Madison Mallards, and more. The tournament features a single-elimination format with 48 teams vying for the championship title, culminating in the final game on September 2nd in Jordan.

As the Atwater baseball team prepares to take on the competition, their dedication to the sport and their community shines through. With a focus on improvement both on and off the field, the Chuckers are poised to make a lasting impact in this year’s state tournament and beyond.
