Bryce Windham of SMCC Retires from Professional Baseball at Age 27

After six seasons in minor league baseball, Bryce Windham has decided to retire at the age of 27. Windham, who reached the Triple A level and even participated in Major League spring training camps with the Chicago Cubs, felt the pull of his hometown of Monroe was too strong to resist. Despite being just one step away from the Major Leagues, Windham made the difficult decision to hang up his cleats and return home.

Growing up in Monroe, Windham was a standout athlete, earning the title of state player of the year in basketball at St. Mary Catholic Central. While baseball was a significant part of his life, it was never his first love. With his parents preparing to step down from their business, Monroe Sports-Varsity Athletics, Windham felt it was time to come home and start working alongside them.

Another factor in Windham’s decision was his wife, Annie. The couple had been together for four years and married for almost a year, but due to Windham’s baseball career, they were often apart for long stretches of time. Windham credits Annie for her unwavering support and sacrifices while he pursued his baseball dreams.

Despite retiring in the midst of one of his best seasons as a pro, Windham leaves the game with a sense of accomplishment. He displayed versatility on the field, playing every position except shortstop or pitcher in the minors. Windham’s statistics speak for themselves, with a career average of .261, 54 doubles, 7 triples, 10 home runs, 131 RBI, 150 runs, and 23 stolen bases.

While Windham may be stepping away from playing, he is not leaving the world of sports behind. He plans to continue coaching, drawing on his experiences in baseball to help mentor and guide the next generation of athletes. Windham has already been assisting his father with SMCC’s boys basketball team and may lend a hand with the Kestrel volleyball team in the fall.

Reflecting on his career, Windham is proud of his journey from being a 32nd-round draft pick to reaching the Triple A level. He believes his story is a testament to hard work and determination, showing that anything is possible with dedication and perseverance. Windham’s passion for sports and competition will continue to drive him as he transitions into coaching and giving back to the community that has always supported him.

As Windham settles into this new chapter of his life, he remains grateful for the opportunities and experiences that baseball has provided him. While he may miss the daily routine of games and practices, Windham is excited to share his knowledge and love for sports with the younger generation. Monroe will always hold a special place in Windham’s heart, and he is eager to do his part in shaping the future of sports in his hometown.
