Coaches‘ preseason poll names Gannon volleyball team as PSAC West favorite

The Gannon women’s volleyball team has been making waves in the PSAC conference, as they have been voted as the Western Division favorite in the 2024 PSAC Preseason Poll. Led by Coach Matt Darling, the team is coming off back-to-back PSAC championships and is looking to continue their winning ways in the upcoming season.

In 2023, the Golden Knights had an impressive season, finishing with a 27-5 overall record and a 14-2 mark in the PSAC West. They secured their second consecutive PSAC West regular-season title and went on to win the PSAC Tournament. This success has earned them the respect of their peers, as they received six first-place votes in the preseason poll.

Despite not receiving a first-place vote, Clarion was ranked second in the poll, followed by IUP who received the other two first-place votes. The competition in the PSAC West is fierce, with teams like Pitt-Johnstown, Edinboro, Seton Hill, Slippery Rock, and California all vying for the top spot.

Coach Darling expressed his gratitude for the preseason ranking but emphasized the importance of hard work and preparation. He acknowledged the challenges that lie ahead in the conference and emphasized the need for the team to be ready to compete in every match. With a talented roster and a winning mindset, the Golden Knights are poised for another successful season.

The team boasts four players who have earned American Volleyball Coaches Association All-America honors, including three from the 2023 season. Senior outside hitter Journey Blevins, senior libero Emma Hall, senior right side Hailey Koch, and junior setter Bengisu Arslan have all been recognized for their outstanding performances on the court. These players will be instrumental in leading the team to victory in the upcoming season.

In 2023, Gannon dominated the PSAC West, winning 13 matches in a row and finishing with a 14-2 record. They secured the No. 1 Western seed in the PSAC Tournament and went on to claim the championship title after defeating Clarion in a thrilling 3-2 match. The team then hosted the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional, where they put on a strong performance before falling to IUP in a close match.

The Golden Knights are gearing up for the upcoming season with a packed schedule, including four matches in two days at the Oredigger Volleyball Classic. They will also be hosting their home opener at the Hagerty Family Events Center on September 11th. With a talented roster, a winning tradition, and a hunger for success, Gannon is ready to take on the competition and make a statement in the PSAC conference.

Overall, the Gannon women’s volleyball team is well-positioned to continue their winning ways in the upcoming season. With a talented roster, experienced coaching staff, and a winning mindset, they are poised to make a strong run at another PSAC championship. Fans can expect exciting matches, fierce competition, and a team that is determined to succeed.
