Dillon Thieneman named to Sporting News Preseason All-America Team

Charlotte, N.C. – Dillon Thieneman, the standout Purdue defensive back, is making waves in the college football world as he heads into the 2024 season. After an impressive freshman campaign that earned him All-American honors, Thieneman is now racking up Preseason All-America recognition from various esteemed organizations. The latest accolade comes from the Sporting News, where he was named to the second team defense on the Preseason All-America teams announced on August 14.

The Sporting News is one of the five organizations recognized by the NCAA to determine consensus and unanimous All-Americans at the end of each season, alongside the American Football Coaches Association, Associated Press, Football Writers Association of America, and Walter Camp Football Foundation.

As Thieneman gears up for his sophomore season, he has also been named a Preseason All-American by the Walter Camp Football Foundation, Athlon Sports, Phil Steele, and Pick Six Previews. Additionally, he has been included on watch lists for prestigious awards such as the Chuck Bednarik Award, Bronko Nagurski Trophy, Jim Thorpe Award, and Lott IMPACT Trophy.

Thieneman’s rise to prominence began in 2023 when he had a breakout freshman season. His stellar performance on the field earned him Third Team All-America honors from The Associated Press, making him the 50th All-American in Purdue’s program history. Notably, he became Purdue’s first All-America defensive back since Steve Jackson in 1990 and the first AP All-America Boilermaker since College Football Hall of Famer Rod Woodson in 1986.

During the 2023 season, Thieneman showcased his exceptional skills by ranking third nationally in interceptions (6) and solo tackles (74), leading all freshmen and setting new Purdue freshman records. His standout performance included a pair of interceptions in a crucial win over Indiana, where he also recorded a team-high eight solo tackles. Thieneman’s six interceptions surpassed the previous freshman record of five, while his 74 solo tackles broke Woodson’s Purdue freshman record of 67 in a single season.

Thieneman’s remarkable achievements in his freshman year did not go unnoticed, as he was named the 2023 Thompson-Randle El Big Ten Freshman of the Year. He led the nation’s freshmen in total tackles (106) and forced fumbles (2), solidifying his status as one of the top young talents in college football.

Heading into the 2024 season, Thieneman is poised to continue his impressive trajectory and lead the Purdue defense to success. The Boilermakers will kick off their season at home against Indiana State on August 31, with Thieneman ready to showcase his skills on the field once again.

In conclusion, Dillon Thieneman’s journey from a standout freshman to a Preseason All-American is a testament to his talent and hard work. As he continues to garner recognition and accolades, all eyes will be on him as he looks to make a significant impact in the upcoming college football season.
