Fundraising Film for Local Tennis Community

The Taylor-based nonprofit, Taylor Area Tennis Association (TATA), is gearing up for a special event in Austin this week that promises to be a unique and exciting experience for sports enthusiasts and fashion lovers alike. The organization, which has been dedicated to providing youths with scholarships, lessons, tournaments, and more since its inception in 2011, is hosting the Austin premiere of Danny Lee’s documentary film „Who is Stan Smith?“ on Tuesday, Aug. 13, at the Austin Film Society.

The film, produced by basketball legend LeBron James and sports marketer Maverick Carter, delves into the life of Stan Smith, a sports icon known for his achievements on the tennis court as well as his philanthropic efforts. While many may recognize Smith for his classic green-and-white Adidas sneakers, the documentary aims to shed light on the man behind the shoes and his impact on the world of sports.

President of TATA, Marcus Reese, expressed the significance of the event for the organization, stating that it will be their biggest fundraiser to date. The premiere will not only provide attendees with a closer look at Smith’s life but also offer a fun and engaging experience with opportunities for photos, drinks, and mingling.

One of the highlights of the event is a contest encouraging attendees to sport their favorite Adidas gear, adding a touch of excitement and camaraderie to the evening. Reese mentioned that they are going all out for the premiere, with plans for a green carpet instead of the traditional red carpet, as well as step-and-repeat banners to enhance the experience.

The idea to host the premiere in Austin was sparked by Reese’s friend, Anthony Tatu, who recognized Reese’s passion for Adidas and saw an opportunity to support a community tennis association like TATA. Tatu, who grew up playing tennis in the ’60s and ’70s, emphasized Smith’s significance in the sport and his humanitarian efforts off the court.

Despite his background in tennis and love for the Adidas brand, Reese admitted that he, like many others, was more familiar with Smith’s shoes than the man himself. However, he acknowledged the importance of honoring Smith’s legacy and the impact he had both in and out of the sports world.

The event, made possible through sponsorships from Workhorse, Dekruyff & Hutchens Law Office, and Capital Area Tennis Association, offers tickets for $35 for general admission or $100 for a VIP Golden Ticket. The proceeds from the screening will benefit TATA and support their programs for the next generation of tennis players.

Overall, the special screening of „Who is Stan Smith?“ promises to be a memorable and impactful event, bringing together sports enthusiasts, fashion aficionados, and supporters of youth tennis in the Austin community. It is a unique opportunity to celebrate a sports legend and contribute to a worthy cause, all while enjoying a night of entertainment and inspiration.
