Idaho Soccer Suffers 3-1 Loss to Seattle U

The Vandal women’s soccer team faced off against Seattle University in a tough match on Sunday afternoon, ultimately falling short with a score of 3-1. Sienna Gonzales managed to score the lone goal for the Vandals in what was the final game of the weekend. Despite the loss, the team showed resilience and determination throughout the game.

Seattle U took an early lead, scoring a goal in the third minute of the match. The Redhawks attacked the right side and managed to cross the ball into the 18-yard box, where U’I Kaaihue capitalized on the opportunity and found the back of the net. This early setback put the Vandals on the defensive, but they continued to fight back.

Alyssa Peters had a notable chance for Idaho in the 15th minute when she stepped up for a free kick just outside the left side of the penalty area. Peters aimed for the net, forcing Seattle U’s keeper to make a crucial save by tipping the shot just over the crossbar. Despite the Vandals‘ efforts to equalize, Seattle U maintained the pressure throughout the first half, even hitting the crossbar in the final seconds.

As the second half unfolded, Gonzales managed to level the score with a well-executed header in the 65th minute. Karli Yoshida-Williams made a brilliant play down the left-hand side, cutting back and crossing the ball into the box where Maddy Lasher and Gonzales were waiting. Gonzales rose above the defenders and directed the ball to the near post, beating the keeper with a precise finish. This goal marked Gonzales‘ second consecutive game with a goal and Yoshida-Williams‘ first assist of the season.

However, Seattle U quickly responded with two goals of their own, putting the game out of reach for the Vandals. The first goal came from a penalty kick after a handball in the box, which Brooke Wilson converted with precision. Less than a minute later, Seattle U extended their lead with a header, further solidifying their advantage.

Despite the setback, Idaho continued to battle until the final whistle, but their efforts were not enough to secure a comeback. The Vandals finished the opening weekend with a 1-1 record on the road and will look to bounce back in their next game against CSUN on August 22nd at noon. The team showed promise and determination in their performance, and they will be looking to build on their strengths as the season progresses.
