Linn-Mar volleyball team remains focused on their goals

The Linn-Mar High School volleyball team faced an unexpected setback as they kicked off their first day of practice without senior standout Kate Passmore. Passmore, a three-year starter and 2023 Class 5A first-team all-stater, made the decision to forgo her final season with the team. While this news could have been crippling for the Lions, Coach Nikki Rowland and the players remained composed and focused on their goals.

Despite Passmore’s absence, the team remained optimistic and determined to make the most of the upcoming season. Senior players Kira and Kelsey Klesner stepped up to lead the team in Passmore’s place. The twins, who will both play at Wisconsin-River Falls next year, are expected to be the offensive powerhouses for the Lions. Kelsey, who averaged 1.80 kills per set last season, and Kira, who contributed 1.23 kills and 3.03 assists per set, are poised to take on larger roles within the team.

Coach Rowland, who took over as head coach midway through last season, brings a wealth of experience and a competitive spirit to the team. Despite her competitive nature, Rowland’s focus has shifted towards developing her players to be their best both on and off the court. She emphasizes positivity, love, and care in every interaction with her players, fostering a supportive and encouraging team environment.

The Lions kicked off their practice with a rigorous three-hour session, focusing on skills and drills, competitive gameplay, and visualization exercises. The team is gearing up for their season opener on August 27th against Cedar Rapids Kennedy. While the absence of Passmore will undoubtedly be felt, the team is determined to prove their doubters wrong and show that they are still a force to be reckoned with.

As the Lions prepare for the upcoming season, they are confident in their abilities and excited to showcase their talent on the court. With strong leadership from the Klesner twins, dedicated coaching from Rowland, and a supportive team dynamic, Linn-Mar High School volleyball is poised for success. Despite the challenges they may face, the Lions are ready to rise to the occasion and make their mark in the upcoming season.
