Lovell’s Volleyball Home Opener to Feature Gold Out Theme

The Marquette University women’s volleyball team is set to honor the memory of the late University President, Dr. Michael R. Lovell, during the upcoming 2024 season. Dr. Lovell passed away in June after a brave battle with bone cancer, and the team will pay tribute to his legacy by wearing patches on their uniforms throughout the season. Fans are also encouraged to wear gold to the season opener against No. 5 Stanford on Wednesday, Sept. 4, as a show of support for the fight against sarcoma and other forms of cancer. Additionally, donations will be collected for The American Cancer Society at the match to further support cancer research and awareness.

Dr. Lovell was a dedicated supporter of Marquette University and the greater Milwaukee community during his tenure as President. He was known for his unwavering commitment to the university’s student-athletes, making his passing a significant loss for the entire Marquette community. To commemorate his contributions, the team will be hosting a special event at the season opener, where the first 100 MU students in attendance will receive free gold MU Volleyball t-shirts.

The 2024 season marks a milestone for the Marquette women’s volleyball program, as it celebrates its 50th season of competition and 20th season in the BIG EAST Conference. Since its inception in the 1975-76 academic year, the team has established itself as a perennial NCAA tournament participant and four-time BIG EAST champion. Season tickets for the full 14-match regular season schedule are available for purchase at just $40, offering fans the opportunity to support the team throughout the season.

In addition to the exciting lineup of matches, the team is introducing a new feature for season ticket members this fall. The Coaches‘ Corner pre-match talk with head coach Ryan Theis and other members of the MU staff will provide fans with a unique behind-the-scenes experience on select game days. The events will include refreshments and light snacks, offering a more intimate look at the team’s preparation and strategy.

The promotional schedule for the season includes a variety of themed events and giveaways, such as Student Appreciation nights, Kids Club Day, and Alumni Weekend. Fans can look forward to special activities like the ‚I’m Feeling (10/)22″ Night, where a friendship bracelet station will be set up, and the SPIKE Hunger Thanksgiving Food Drive, where canned goods can be exchanged for tickets. These events aim to engage fans and create a vibrant atmosphere at home matches throughout the season.

For fans looking to connect with the team beyond the court, a pregame social event will be held in Madison prior to the match against the University of Wisconsin on Sept. 17. This event at Wando’s Bar & Grill is open to all MU supporters and provides an opportunity to mingle with fellow fans and alumni before the game. Additionally, fans can stay updated on team news and events by following the Marquette University women’s volleyball program on social media platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.

Overall, the 2024 season promises to be an exciting and meaningful one for the Marquette University women’s volleyball team. With a focus on honoring the legacy of Dr. Michael R. Lovell, supporting cancer research, and engaging fans through a variety of events and promotions, the team is poised to make a positive impact both on and off the court. Fans are encouraged to show their support by attending matches, wearing gold, and participating in the various activities planned throughout the season.
