Mitchell girls tennis team brings wealth of experience and high expectations into 2024 season

The Mitchell High School varsity girls tennis program is gearing up for a new season with a roster full of experienced players. With all six Day 1 starters holding at least one varsity letter, and five of them having competed in a state championship match at the 2023 Class AA state tennis tournament, the team is poised for success in 2024. Head coach Pat Moller expressed confidence in the team’s experience, stating that they have the potential to go far this season.

After challenge matches during the first week of practice, the team’s returning singles starters from last season shifted up one flight position. Megan Mastel leads the lineup at Flight 1 singles, followed by Carsyn Weich, Katie Morgan, Elly Clement, Matteah Graves, and Mia Larson. The doubles pairings consist of Mastel and Weich, Clement and Graves, and Morgan and Larson. This lineup showcases the depth and talent of the team, with each player bringing valuable experience to the court.

At the top of the lineup, Mastel stands out with three state tournament singles titles under her belt. Weich and Graves also had impressive state runner-up finishes in singles last season. In doubles, Weich and Clement claimed a state title, while Morgan and Graves were runners-up. The team’s success in previous seasons sets a high standard for the upcoming matches, with the players eager to challenge themselves and improve their game.

The team’s focus on day-to-day consistency and the right mindset is crucial for their success. Moller emphasizes the importance of playing like champions and approaching each match with a winning attitude. The players are determined to compete at their best and aim for victory in every match they play. This mindset, combined with their experience and skill, positions the team as a strong contender in the upcoming season.

Despite the team’s wealth of experience, there is also a significant youth presence on the roster. With sophomores Morgan, Graves, and Larson, as well as freshmen Elliot Smith and Ava Prunty, the team has a mix of seasoned players and young talent. Moller commends the team’s performance and chemistry, highlighting their ability to bring out the best in each other. The blend of experience and youth bodes well for the team’s future success.

As the season progresses, senior leaders Weich and Clement stress the importance of staying focused and supporting each other as a team. With a packed schedule of duals and tournaments ahead, the team is gearing up for challenging matchups against top competitors. The players are determined to give their best effort and strive for success in every match they play.

The Mitchell High School varsity girls tennis team has started the season strong with dual sweeps against Aberdeen Roncalli and Huron. With upcoming home matches and key matchups against top teams, the team is ready to showcase their talent and compete at a high level. As they aim for success in the Eastern South Dakota Conference tournament and the Class AA state tournament, the team’s experience, skill, and determination will be key factors in their quest for victory.
