Pirate Girls Tennis Team Victorious at Crookston Invite

The Crookston Pirate Girls Tennis team emerged victorious at the recent Crookston Pirate Booster/Carla Johnson Memorial tournament, showcasing their talent and determination on the tennis courts. The team claimed the team title with 14 points, narrowly edging out East Grand Forks by just one point. It was a day filled with intense competition and impressive performances from the Crookston players, who displayed their skills and resilience in the scorching heat.

Coach Gina Gunderson expressed her satisfaction with the team’s performance, stating, „It was a great day of tennis. It was hot today, but most of the girls were able to get through the day and competed well.“ The team’s success was evident in their individual achievements, with standout performances from several players across different categories.

Leading the charge for Crookston was Ava Martin, who dominated the third singles category by winning all three matches with a combined score of 36-11. Martin’s exceptional skills and determination were on full display as she battled her opponents and secured victory in the championship match against Gianna Manny of Hibbing. Coach Gunderson praised Martin’s performance, stating, „Ava is playing some great tennis for us right now and had three great matches. She was able to battle the heat too and played well.“

Another highlight of the tournament was the stellar performance of the second doubles team comprising Georgia Sanders and Logan Brekken. The duo showcased excellent teamwork and skill as they triumphed in all three of their matches. Their resilience and composure were evident in their hard-fought victories, culminating in a well-deserved championship win against a formidable team from East Grand Forks. Coach Gunderson commended Sanders and Brekken, stating, „They clicked even if it was their first matches they played together.“

In addition to the first and second-place finishes, Crookston also secured notable achievements in other categories. The third doubles team of Taylor Schultz, Madi Anderson, Emma LaPlante, Taylor Weiland, Chloe Boll, and Lucy Smith put up a strong performance, winning their first two matches and finishing in second place. Coach Gunderson highlighted the team’s efforts, stating, „We are working hard on figuring out our third doubles team and have a lot of girls that are fighting for the spot so today was a great chance to get them all some matches.“

The tournament also saw commendable performances from Ashlyn Bailey, Emelia Hoerner, Mariah Overgaard, Kaylie Clauson, Addie Fee, and other members of the Crookston team. Each player showcased their skills and determination, contributing to the team’s overall success and demonstrating their passion for the sport.
