Preview: Vail Christian girls volleyball team ready to finish what they started

The Vail Christian girls volleyball team is gearing up for the 2024 season with high hopes and a strong sense of determination. Led by senior libero Jessie Allen and sophomore outside hitter Mary McClarrinon, the team is looking to build on their success from last year when they went 18-5 overall and 14-0 in league play. Despite falling short of a state berth in the regional tournament, the Saints are entering this season with the motto ‚unfinished business‘ as they aim to make a deeper run in the playoffs.

Head coach Britney Branson, in her second year at the helm, has instilled a sense of excitement and energy in the team as they prepare for the upcoming season. The players have been putting in the work during tryouts and team events like ‚midnight madness‘ to bond and build camaraderie. Additionally, the team received valuable insights from retired Colorado State University coach Tom Hilbert, who focused on mental grit, culture, leadership, and visualization with the players.

One of the key areas of focus for the team this season is filling the gaps in the middle position left by graduated players from last year. Sophomores Olivia Zajac, Stella Hawkins, and Terri-Ann Kohrmann are vying for the opportunity to step up and contribute in the middle. With a relatively young roster consisting of four seniors, one junior, and seven sophomores, the team is relying on the leadership of the upperclassmen to guide the younger players and set the tone for the season.

Jessie Allen, with four years of experience under her belt, is a pivotal player for the Saints. As the team’s libero, she brings consistency and a strong defensive presence to the court. Allen’s ability to command the ball and protect the court, along with her scoring prowess from the service line, makes her a valuable asset for Vail Christian. On the other hand, Mary McClarrinon, the team’s leading attacker from last season, is expected to continue her offensive dominance and develop into a well-rounded player capable of contributing in all facets of the game.

Looking ahead to the competition in the league, Branson anticipates tough matchups against perennial rivals like Meeker and Plateau Valley. These teams have proven to be formidable opponents in the past, and the Saints will need to bring their A-game to defend their title and make a push for a state berth. To prepare for the challenges ahead, the team has scheduled matches against Front Range opponents to improve their transition play and strategic awareness on the court.

Culturally, Branson is focused on enhancing communication and teamwork within the team, both on and off the court. By fostering a supportive and cohesive environment, the coaching staff aims to maximize the potential of each player and create a winning formula for success. With a strong start to the season and a dedicated group of players, the Vail Christian girls volleyball team is poised for a memorable and successful campaign in 2024.
