Renegades and Dutchess Tourism recognize Bhutanese youth baseball players

The Hudson Valley Renegades recently played host to a group of young athletes from Bhutan, marking a significant milestone for both the players and the team. The Bhutanese teens, who had never traveled outside their country before, embarked on an 8,000-mile journey to New York to experience professional baseball and immerse themselves in American culture.

Upon arriving at Heritage Financial Park, the Bhutanese athletes were greeted with awe-inspiring sights that left a lasting impression on them. Ngawang Gyeltshen, one of the teenagers, captured the moments with his camera phone, ensuring that the memories would be preserved forever. The photos and videos he shared on Facebook allowed his family back home to share in the excitement of his once-in-a-lifetime experience.

The journey from Bhutan to New York was made possible through the efforts of the Hudson Valley Renegades, who reached out to the Bhutan Baseball & Softball Association to support the budding baseball scene in the Himalayan country. What started as a fundraising initiative for equipment and uniforms blossomed into a cultural exchange program that brought a group of Bhutanese players to the United States.

The Bhutanese teens were treated to a whirlwind tour of Dutchess County, with stops at local attractions such as the Dutchess County Fair and the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum. They also received baseball instruction from the Renegades and had the opportunity to visit MLB headquarters in Manhattan and attend a Yankees game.

The highlight of their visit was the ceremonial first pitches thrown by the Bhutanese athletes before a Renegades game. The players, dressed in traditional Bhutanese attire, stood proudly on the field as both nations‘ anthems were played, symbolizing the unity and friendship between the two countries.

The Bhutanese players were also given the chance to experience the thrill of batting practice with a simulator that replicated pitches from MLB star Shohei Ohtani. Their enthusiasm and athleticism shone through as they took swings and crossed home plate with flair, showcasing their love for the game.

The Renegades went above and beyond to make the Bhutanese athletes feel welcome, even designing special jerseys featuring the mythological Thunder Dragon, a national symbol of Bhutan. The players wore these jerseys during a game, adding a touch of Bhutanese culture to the American pastime.

As the Bhutanese players cheered on the Renegades to a resounding victory, the spirit of camaraderie and sportsmanship was palpable. The Renegades presented a generous donation to the Bhutan Baseball & Softball Association, further solidifying the bond between the two organizations and supporting the growth of baseball in Bhutan.

The success of this cultural exchange program serves as a testament to the power of sports in bridging cultural divides and fostering international friendships. The Bhutanese athletes‘ journey to New York not only enriched their lives but also left a lasting impact on the Renegades and the community, showcasing the universal language of baseball and the spirit of unity that transcends borders.
