Staff and campers bring high energy to Hancock basketball camp

The 11th annual Hancock College Youth Basketball Camp kicked off with a burst of energy on Monday, with veteran head basketball coach Tyson Aye and future women’s lead assistant basketball coach Connor Dodd leading the charge. The camp, held at Hancock’s Joe White Memorial Gymnasium, is designed for boys and girls aged eight through 14 and is sponsored by the Hancock men’s basketball program. Coaches from the program are actively involved as camp staffers, providing valuable instruction and guidance to the young participants.

As the campers engaged in various drills and activities, Dodd’s enthusiastic encouragement filled the gym. He motivated the youngsters to push themselves and strive for improvement, emphasizing the importance of effort and perseverance. Dodd, who will transition to the role of lead assistant women’s coach in the upcoming season, expressed his passion for giving back to the community through these camps and interacting with the young athletes.

One standout participant, Khloe Hernandez, showcased her agility and skills during the ball-handling drill. Hernandez, a 14-year-old forward with aspirations of playing for the Righetti High School girls basketball program, praised the energy and intensity of the camp activities. Her positive experience reflects the camp’s commitment to fostering a supportive and engaging environment for all participants.

Aye, who oversees the annual youth basketball camp and actively participates as a staffer, expressed his satisfaction with the turnout of approximately 30 campers. Despite slightly lower numbers compared to previous years, Aye emphasized the importance of having local youth engage in the camp and benefit from the basketball experience. The camp serves as a platform for young athletes to develop their skills, build confidence, and form lasting connections with their peers and coaches.

Campers like Abram Wilson and Dominic Mendoza, members of the Huskies youth basketball team, shared their enthusiasm for the drills and activities at the camp. Their enjoyment highlights the value of structured training and skill development in a fun and supportive setting. The camp’s emphasis on teamwork, discipline, and sportsmanship resonates with participants of all ages and skill levels, creating a positive and inclusive atmosphere.

The dedication of camp staffers like Shemarr Parker, a former Hancock basketball player and upcoming assistant coach, further enhances the camp experience. Parker’s passion for sharing his knowledge and love for the game with the young campers underscores the transformative power of basketball in bringing people together. His commitment to communication and mentorship reflects the camp’s overarching goal of instilling valuable life lessons through the sport.

Overall, the 11th annual Hancock College Youth Basketball Camp exemplifies the spirit of community, teamwork, and growth. Through the guidance of experienced coaches, the enthusiasm of dedicated campers, and the supportive environment of the camp, young athletes have the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive both on and off the court. As the camp continues throughout the week, the energy and excitement are sure to remain high, leaving a lasting impact on all who participate.
