Texas volleyball debuts as SEC team in scrimmage

The Texas volleyball team showcased their dominance in a preseason scrimmage against UTSA, winning all five sets at Gregory Gymnasium. While the scoreboard reflected a clear victory for the Longhorns, Coach Jerritt Elliott was more focused on assessing the team’s intensity, chemistry, and the integration of new players into the lineup. With a large roster of 20 players, including high-profile newcomers, Elliott wanted to see how different lineups would perform against the Roadrunners.

Elliott expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, noting that many players displayed a high level of play throughout the scrimmage. The packed house at Gregory Gymnasium was treated to a glimpse of the back-to-back national champions in action, as the Longhorns showcased their skills and teamwork on the court.

One of the standout observations from the scrimmage was the impressive offensive skills displayed by the middle blockers. While the departure of defensive stalwart Asjia O’Neal left a void in the team’s defensive lineup, the revamped middle blockers showed a more potent offensive presence. Redshirt sophomore Marianna Singletary and freshman Ayden Ames made a significant impact in the first set, combining for seven kills on eight swings. This offensive prowess bodes well for the team’s performance in the upcoming season.

In terms of setter depth, Texas boasts an enviable pair in Averi Carlson and Ella Swindle. Carlson, a transfer from Baylor with multiple All-Big 12 honors, joined the Longhorns in the offseason, adding another dimension to the team’s already strong lineup. In the scrimmage, Carlson seamlessly integrated into the team’s scheme, showcasing her skills as a setter alongside Swindle. The duo’s performance on the court highlighted the team’s depth and versatility in the setter position.

Another area of focus was identifying a reliable attacker opposite Madisen Skinner, the team’s standout player from last season. Reagan Rutherford, a fifth-year senior and transfer from Kentucky, is expected to take on this role. While Rutherford saw limited rotations in the scrimmage, other players like Whitney Lauenstein, Jenna Wenaas, Jordyn Byrd, and Devin Kahahawai also made significant contributions. The competition for the opposite attacker position promises to be intense, with players vying for a spot in the team’s rotation.

Overall, the scrimmage provided valuable insights into the team’s strengths and areas for improvement as they prepare for the upcoming season. With a mix of experienced players and talented newcomers, the Texas volleyball team looks poised to continue their winning ways and make a strong push for another national title. Fans can expect an exciting season ahead as the Longhorns aim to defend their championship status and showcase their skills on the court.
