U.S. Open Kids‘ Day attracts a crowd of young tennis enthusiasts

U.S. Open Fan Week at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center came to a close on Saturday with a special focus on inspiring young tennis fans. The highlight of the day was Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day, an annual event aimed at encouraging the next generation of tennis stars to pursue their dreams on the court.

Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day is a free and open-to-the-public event that attracts kids from across the five boroughs of New York City. The event pays tribute to tennis legend Arthur Ashe, who remains the only Black man to have won the singles title at Wimbledon, the U.S. Open, and the Australian Open. Ashe’s legacy serves as an inspiration for young players of color like Stanley Oriala, who attended the event with his siblings and parents. Oriala expressed his admiration for Ashe and the energy of the players on the court, highlighting the special atmosphere of the U.S. Open.

For many young attendees like Aiden Fernandez, Madison Cagata, and Oriala, Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day offers a unique opportunity to witness their favorite tennis players in action. From watching matches to participating in tennis challenges and games, kids of all ages have the chance to engage with the sport and develop their skills. Cagata, a 9-year-old aspiring tennis player, shared her dreams of winning challenges and competing in the Olympics in the future.

In addition to tennis activities, Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day features entertainment such as face painting, balloon artists, and musical performances, creating a festive atmosphere for families to enjoy. The event aims to bring the sport of tennis to underserved communities in the city, providing access and exposure to a diverse range of young players. Kateri Gonzalez, a parent of Afro-Latino children, emphasized the importance of exposing her kids to different opportunities and role models in the sport.

As Fan Week comes to a close, New Yorkers have had the chance to experience the excitement of the U.S. Open for free before the tournament officially begins on Monday. The event serves as a celebration of tennis and the legacy of Arthur Ashe, inspiring young fans to pursue their passion for the sport. With the support of events like Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day, the U.S. Open continues to foster a love for tennis among the next generation of players and fans.
