Westerly’s Belief Leads to Second D2 Title in Three Years in Baseball Postseason | Latest Sports News

The Westerly baseball program has set its sights on winning state championships, and this season, they made that goal a reality. Head coach Ron Sposato expressed his confidence in the team’s abilities, stating that they had the roster and coaching staff to be the last team standing at the end of the season. This belief carried the Bulldogs through a successful season, culminating in their second Division II state title in the last three seasons.

In the championship series against East Greenwich, Westerly secured a 6-3 victory in Game 2 to complete a two-game sweep at Rhode Island College’s Pontarelli Field. The Bulldogs got off to a strong start, scoring four runs early in the game. Junior Zack Miner played a crucial role in the victory, closing out the game on the mound with two scoreless innings in relief of starting pitcher Jack Tenuta.

Miner had an outstanding season both on the mound and at the plate. Over 43 innings, he did not allow any earned runs, finishing with a record of 4-0, 4 saves, 40 strikeouts, and 13 walks. His impressive performance earned him the title of Division 2 Player of the Year. Coach Sposato praised Miner for his consistency and composure in high-pressure situations, highlighting his impact on the team’s success.

Joining Miner on the Division 2 first-team were standout players like Michael Poole, Tom Fiore, and Jack Tenuta. Poole, a junior pitcher/first baseman, finished the season with a record of 6-0, 83 strikeouts, and a 1.99 ERA. Fiore, a sophomore outfielder/pitcher, contributed with a .356 batting average, 25 RBI, and 8 doubles. Senior pitcher and captain Jack Tenuta also made significant contributions to the team’s success with a record of 5-2, 52 strikeouts, and a 2.05 ERA.

The Bulldogs‘ journey to the Division 2 championship was filled with intense matchups and close games. They faced tough opponents like Burrillville and East Providence, with each game testing their skills and resilience. In the end, Westerly’s determination and teamwork led them to victory, securing their sixth state championship in program history.

As the final out was recorded, with Simmons catching a foul pop-up near third base, Coach Sposato reflected on the team’s success and the bright future ahead for Westerly baseball. With a talented roster and a winning mindset, the Bulldogs have established themselves as a force to be reckoned with in Rhode Island high school baseball.

In conclusion, Westerly’s triumph in the Division II state championship is a testament to their hard work, dedication, and belief in their abilities. The team’s success this season is a result of their collective effort, individual talent, and unwavering commitment to achieving their goal of winning state championships. As they celebrate their latest title, the Bulldogs look ahead to future seasons with optimism and confidence, knowing that they have what it takes to continue their winning tradition.
