Youth in need tournament hosted by Topeka Area Sports Commission

The Topeka Area Sports Commission (TASC) recently hosted its Second Annual Mini-Golf Tournament, bringing together families, friends, and colleagues for a morning of fun and friendly competition. The event, held at the Sports Center, offered a variety of games beyond just mini-golf, including disc golf, ladder ball, and corn hole, thanks to the generous sponsorship of Play It Again Sports.

One participant, Terica Gatewood from Play It Again Sports, shared her excitement about the event, stating, “I brought my son out today for some fun right before school starts. So we’re going to enjoy some Putt-Putt golf. A little competition today, a lot of fun, and just a lot of community and family.” This sentiment was echoed by many attendees who were eager to enjoy a day of leisurely sports activities.

However, beyond the enjoyment of the games, there was a deeper purpose to the tournament. Mike Bell, director of TASC, highlighted the importance of the event in raising funds for sporting equipment that can be provided to kids in the community. He explained, “What we’ll do is quarterly distributions where there is going to be a form online that folks will fill out with their needs. We look at socioeconomics, we look at different pieces of the community to make sure again, that kids have the gear to play.”

Valerie Peckham, another attendee, emphasized the significance of supporting young athletes through events like the Mini-Golf Tournament. She expressed her anticipation for the camaraderie of the games and the opportunity to contribute to a cause that benefits children in need. TASC’s initiative, TASC Cares, aims to provide grants to community sports programs in Topeka, ensuring that all children have access to the necessary equipment to participate in sports.

Sports are often seen as a great equalizer, offering valuable lessons and opportunities for personal growth. Gatewood highlighted the positive impact of sports on individuals and communities, stating, “Sports teaches, especially kids and adults alike so much. It’s great for their health, it’s great engagement with the family. And as a community, we all come out and have community pride here in Topeka.”

In conclusion, the Second Annual Mini-Golf Tournament hosted by TASC was not only a fun-filled event but also a meaningful initiative to support young athletes in the community. By raising funds for sporting equipment and providing grants to sports programs, TASC is ensuring that all children have the opportunity to engage in sports and reap the benefits of physical activity and teamwork. Through events like these, Topeka continues to foster a strong sense of community and support for its youth.
